What Is a Remote Trainer?
A remote trainer lets you send a quick, clear cue, usually a tone and/or training-level stimulation, to interrupt a behavior and redirect your dog when your voice isn't enough. It's a training tool used alongside consistency and positive reinforcement.
Not a magic button. A remote trainer works best when paired with consistent training, praise, and redirection. It's a communication tool, not a replacement for teaching.
Not GPS. Not Wi-Fi telepathy. These are Bluetooth or radio-frequency tools with a defined range. They don't track your dog's location or work from across town.
Remote Trainer ≠ Dog Fence
Fence = automatic boundary rule | Remote trainer = manual cue you choose to send
What Problems Does This Help With?
Common behaviors that respond well to remote training support
Jumping on Guests
Counter Surfing
Digging
Excessive Barking
Not Coming When Called
Chasing Distractions
Driveway Testing
Garden Bed Intrusion
Note: For barking, a remote trainer provides training support when you're present. It's not an automatic bark collar.

Ask UsLink Remote Trainer: In Depth
The Link app turns your smartphone into a training remote, with bonus features you won't get from a standalone remote.
What You Can Do
- Send audible warnings from your phone
- Deliver any of the 13 correction levels
- Switch between multiple dogs with pictures for quick ID
- Adjust GentleSteps correction level directly in the app
- View warnings and corrections history (day/week/month)
- Check collar battery status and get low-battery visibility
- Toggle the nightlight on the collar
Dealer-controlled safety: We can limit how many levels are unlocked in your app, so you can't accidentally over-correct. Other settings changes go through us.
How You Actually Use It
Open the app and select your dog
Start with a warning tone as a reminder
If needed, apply a low training level (briefly)
Immediately redirect and praise the correct behavior
Important: Live remote trainer actions require Bluetooth range. The Link app does not work from anywhere. You need to be near your dog.
URT Remote Trainer: In Depth
The Universal Remote Trainer is a dedicated handheld device that works with our standard receivers. Great for off-property use or anyone who prefers a physical remote.
Buttons & Modes
- Tone: Audible beep up to 10 seconds per press/hold
- Vibration: Often used as a praise or reward signal
- ½-second stimulation: Brief training correction
- 1-second stimulation: For difficult or dangerous situations
- Two-dog control: Switch between dogs on one remote
- Range alert: Know when you're approaching the limits
Range
Up to 150 feet with direct line of sight. Walls, terrain, and interference will reduce effective range. The range alert helps you know when you're getting close to the edge.
How It Works with Your Collar
The URT system includes a small remote receiver that attaches to your dog's existing fence collar strap. This receiver should be within a few inches of the fence collar receiver for proper stimulation activation.
Safety & Handling
- ✓ Remove the training collar daily to reduce skin irritation risk
- ✓ Components are water resistant, not waterproof. Don't submerge
- ✓ Not a substitute for responsible supervision

Frequently Asked Questions
Choosing
It depends on your goals. If you mainly need training support around the house and like using your phone, Link is convenient and packed with extra features. If you need longer range, prefer a dedicated remote, or plan to use it off-property frequently, URT is a better fit. Many customers start without either and add one later if specific behaviors need extra attention. View pricing for all add-ons.
Yes. If you start with a standard system and decide you want Link or URT capabilities, we can upgrade your setup. Just give us a call.
Range & Reliability
Yes, the Link app works within Bluetooth range, including through typical walls. You can use it from inside while your dog is in the yard, as long as you're within range.
No. The remote trainer function requires Bluetooth range. You cannot send corrections or warnings from across town. The app's monitoring features (like viewing history or battery status) work when you reconnect, but live commands need proximity.
Up to 150 feet with direct line of sight. Real-world range is often less due to walls, trees, terrain, and interference. The range alert on the remote will notify you when you're approaching the edge of connection.
Safety & Comfort
The URT components are water resistant, not waterproof. They can handle rain and wet grass, but should not be submerged. The Link collar is more water resistant and can be submerged during swimming with no issue.
For skin health, we recommend removing the collar daily. This prevents pressure sores and irritation. It's the same guidance we give for the fence collar.
We use the term "training-level stimulation" because it more accurately describes what the dog experiences. It's a brief, adjustable signal meant to get attention and interrupt a behavior, not to cause pain. Combined with our GentleSteps approach (which emphasizes tone/warning first, low levels, and lots of positive reinforcement), most dogs respond to the warning alone after initial training.
Practical Usage
For Link, yes. The app can be installed on multiple phones in your household, and anyone within Bluetooth range can use it. For URT, whoever has the handheld remote has control.
Yes, but with a caveat. A remote trainer helps when you're present and actively training. You hear the barking, send a tone or correction, then redirect. It's not an automatic bark collar that activates on its own. For nuisance barking when you're home, it can be very effective as part of a consistent training routine.
That's exactly why we offer unlimited support. If your dog isn't responding as expected, we can adjust settings (including removing the half-second delay or increasing levels). The key is communication. Reach out and let us try different approaches.
