Outdoor Invisible Dog Fence
Keep your dog safely in your yard without a physical fence. Custom-designed for your property, professionally installed, and backed by a 12-month money-back containment guarantee.Professionally installed, backed by a 12-month money-back guarantee.
How an Invisible Dog Fence Works
An invisible dog fence uses a buried boundary wire and a lightweight receiver collar to create a safe, invisible boundary around your property. No physical fence needed, no blocked views, no ongoing maintenance. Here's how it works:
The Transmitter
Installed in your garage or utility space, the transmitter sends a radio signal through the buried boundary wire. It includes built-in surge protection and alerts you if there's ever a break in the wire.
The Boundary Wire
Professional-grade 16-gauge wire is buried around your property, typically about 4 inches deep (deeper in wet or sandy areas). Once installed, it's completely invisible and won't affect mowing or landscaping.
The Receiver Collar
Your dog wears a lightweight, rechargeable collar that detects the signal from the boundary wire. When your dog approaches the boundary, the collar beeps as a warning. If they continue forward, they receive a brief, harmless static correction, similar to touching a doorknob after walking on carpet.
What Your Dog Experiences
During training, your dog learns that the beep means "turn back, I'm about to be rewarded." We pair the boundary training with high-quality treats and positive reinforcement, so your dog associates turning away from the boundary with good things. Within 7–10 days, most dogs respond to the beep alone and rarely experience the correction.
The result? Your dog has freedom to run, play, and explore your yard. You have peace of mind knowing they can't escape into traffic, chase wildlife, or wander into a neighbor's property.
Why Choose Professional Dog Fence Installation
Not all invisible fences are created equal. Here's what sets Dog Fence Ontario apart:
Rechargeable Collars, No Ongoing Battery Costs
Our Pet Stop EcoLite collars are fully rechargeable, just place them in the charging cradle like a phone. Competitors like Invisible Fence® use disposable batteries that cost $25+ every few months. Over the life of your system, that's hundreds of dollars saved per dog.
Lifetime Equipment Warranty
All collars, chargers, and transmitters are covered by Pet Stop's Lifetime UltraCare Warranty, including accidental damage, not just manufacturing defects. If something breaks, you pay only a 20% deductible. Most competitors offer 1–2 year warranties at best.
12-Month Money-Back Guarantee
If we can't successfully contain your dog within the first year, you get a full refund. We've completed over 1,000 installations with a 99.75% containment success rate, but you're protected if your dog is in that rare group we can't contain. Conditions apply: You'll need to follow the training plan and give us a fair chance to adjust settings for your dog.
GentleSteps™ Training
Our training method uses gradual, low-level corrections that teach your dog without scaring them. We start at the lowest setting, what we call "just a tickle," and increase only as high as each dog's temperament requires. Dogs learn from the warning beep, not from pain.
Professional Installation
We use commercial trenching equipment to bury high-quality copper-clad steel wire with a durable burial-grade jacket about 4 inches deep, protected from lawnmowers, aerators, and shovels. DIY kits typically bury wire 1–2 inches deep with hand tools, leading to frequent breaks.
No Hidden Fees, Free Lifetime Support
Need help adjusting your collar settings? Have a training question six months from now? Phone, text, and email support is always free. We also include one free on-site revisit within 30 days if you want another hands-on session. Invisible Fence® charges $150+ for service calls just to press a few buttons.
Local, Family-Owned Business
Dog Fence Ontario has been serving Southwestern Ontario for 16 years. When you call, you talk to the owner, not a call center. We're invested in keeping your dog safe because our reputation depends on it.
Invisible Fence Layout Options
We design custom layouts for any property. Here are the most common configurations, but we can adapt to almost any situation.
Standard Perimeter
Wire runs around your entire property, front yard, back yard, and side yards. Your dog has full access to roam everywhere within the boundary. This is our most popular layout and works for any lot shape: square, L-shaped, or irregular.
With Exclusion Zones
Full perimeter coverage with specific areas blocked off inside your yard. Keep your dog out of the vegetable garden, away from the pool, or off the kids' play structure.
Dual Zone / Hourglass
Front and back yards are separate zones with side yards blocked. Your dog can only move between zones by going through the house. Great for controlling when your dog has front yard access.
Backyard Only (Double Loop)
Contains your dog to the backyard only. The front yard stays pet-free. Uses a "double-back loop" where wire runs out and back along the same path.
Banana Loop
Uses your house as part of the boundary. Wire runs from one back corner of your house, around the backyard, and to the other corner. Simple and effective for backyard-only containment.
Waterfront / Lake Access
We can give your dog access to docks, beaches, or shorelines while keeping them contained to your property. Waterfront layouts require careful planning, we'll discuss the safest approach during your consultation.
Existing Fence Integration
Already have a fence but your dog finds ways out? We can add an invisible fence as a backup, closing gaps under gates, preventing jumping, or covering areas where traditional fencing isn't possible.

Get Your Custom LayoutDog Fence Training: The GentleSteps™ Method
The technology is only half the equation, training is what makes an invisible fence actually work. A poorly trained dog will be confused, fearful, or will simply run through the boundary. A well-trained dog respects the boundary happily and confidently.
Our GentleSteps™ method is designed to teach, not punish.
We start with positive reinforcement. On day one, your dog learns that the warning beep means "turn around and come back," and every time they do, they're rewarded with treats and praise. We begin at the lowest correction level, so low your dog barely notices it. What we call "just a tickle." Once your dog has learned the basics, we only increase the correction as high as needed to deter real-world distractions like squirrels, other dogs, or children running by. Most dogs figure it out within days and respond to the warning beep alone.

Professional Invisible Fence Installation
The wire buried in your yard is the foundation of your invisible fence. If it breaks, your fence stops working and your dog is at risk. That's why we take installation seriously.
Professional-Grade Wire
We use 16-gauge direct-burial wire with a heavy insulation jacket, the same commercial-grade wire professional installers use. DIY kits typically use thinner 20-gauge wire that's more prone to breakage.
Proper Burial Depth
Our commercial trenching equipment buries wire about 4 inches deep in typical conditions, and up to 6 inches in wet or sandy areas. This protects the wire from lawnmowers, aerators, foot traffic, and accidental digging.
Clean Driveway Crossings
Where wire crosses hard surfaces (driveways, sidewalks, patios), we cut a clean channel and seal it properly. For gravel driveways, wire goes underneath. Conduit upgrades are available for added protection.
Moisture-Protected Connections
All wire connections use silicone-filled connectors to prevent corrosion. The transmitter monitors the wire circuit continuously. If there's ever a break, you'll know immediately.
Why This Matters
Cheap installations lead to wire breaks. Wire breaks mean service calls, frustration, and a dog that might escape while the system is down. We'd rather do it right the first time.

Challenging Properties
Not every property is a simple rectangle. We've installed systems on all kinds of lots:
- Large acreage: farms, estates, multi-acre properties
- Waterfront: lakes, ponds, rivers, beachfront
- Heavily wooded: we work around trees and root systems
- Hilly terrain: slopes and uneven ground are no problem
- Irregular shapes: pie lots, flag lots, oddly shaped parcels
- Properties with existing fencing: we can integrate or supplement
- Shared driveways: we design around access points
- Rental properties & cottages: seasonal installations available
If you're not sure whether your property will work, just ask. We'll take a look and let you know.
Describe Your PropertyInvisible Fencing vs. Traditional Fencing
Wondering whether to install a physical fence or go invisible? Here's how they compare:
| Factor | Dog Fence Ontario | Traditional Fence |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | $1,800 – $3,500 typical | $8,000 – $25,000+ for wood/vinyl |
| Installation Time | 2-4 hours | Days to weeks |
| Appearance | Invisible, preserves your view | Visible, may block sightlines |
| Maintenance | None (wire is underground) | Painting, staining, repairs |
| Subdivision Rules | Usually compliant | Often restricted or prohibited |
| Escape Prevention | Dog learns boundary | Dogs can jump, dig, or chew through |
| Coverage | Any property shape, any size | Limited by terrain, cost |
| Lifespan | 20+ years (wire), 10+ years (equipment) | 10-20 years (wood), longer for vinyl |
| Containment Guarantee | 12-month money-back guarantee | No containment guarantee |
When Traditional Fencing Makes More Sense:
- You need to keep other animals OUT (deer, coyotes, neighbor's dogs)
- Your dog has separation anxiety and needs visual barriers
- You have very young children you also need to contain
- Local bylaws require physical fencing for certain breeds
When Invisible Fencing Makes More Sense:
- You want to preserve your view or property aesthetics
- Your subdivision rules prohibit or restrict physical fences
- Your property is large, oddly shaped, or has challenging terrain
- You want to protect gardens, pools, or specific zones within your yard
- Your budget doesn't allow for traditional fencing
GPS Dog Fence vs Underground Fence
You may have seen ads for GPS dog fences or wireless containment systems. While the technology is improving, here's why we still recommend buried-wire systems:
Boundary Accuracy
A buried wire creates an exact, consistent boundary. GPS systems are accurate to 5-15 feet at best, and that accuracy drops near trees, buildings, or in bad weather. For a dog near a road, 10 feet of error could be the difference between safety and disaster.
Collar Weight & Battery Life
Our EcoLite collar weighs under 1 oz and lasts 3-4 weeks per charge. GPS collars often weigh more and need charging every 24-48 hours. That's a lot of bulk for your dog and a lot of hassle for you.
Property Shape
GPS systems create circular boundaries, but most yards aren't circles. Our buried wire follows your exact property lines, no matter the shape.
Reliability
Buried wire doesn't depend on satellites, cell signals, or weather conditions. It works the same every time. GPS signals can drop, drift, or lag, especially in challenging environments.
No Monthly Fees
Most GPS systems require a subscription ($15-25/month) for the life of the system. Our system has no ongoing fees.
Geomagnetic Storms
Solar activity can disrupt GPS satellite networks, causing accuracy to degrade or fail entirely. With a GPS fence, you might get a notification saying "don't let your dog out for the next day or two." This will never happen with a wired system.
When GPS might work:
GPS collars can make sense for large rural properties (10+ acres) where boundary precision matters less, or for hunting dogs that roam far from home. For typical residential properties, buried wire is more reliable.
What Does an Invisible Dog Fence Cost?
Most invisible dog fence installations range from $1,945 to $3,500 + HST, depending on your property size, number of dogs, and layout complexity. That includes professional installation, a rechargeable receiver collar, GentleSteps™ training, and our lifetime UltraCare warranty. Unlike traditional fencing ($8,000–$25,000+), an invisible fence works for any yard shape with zero maintenance and no blocked views.
Invisible Dog Fence Guarantee
20-Year UltraCare Warranty
Your collar, charger, and transmitter are covered for 20 years. This includes accidental damage, not just manufacturing defects. If something breaks, we'll replace it for 20% of the original cost (return of the failed equipment required).
12-Month Containment Guarantee
If we can't successfully train your dog to respect the boundary within the first year, you get a full refund, provided training steps are followed and we have the chance to adjust settings. (We've only had to honor this a handful of times in 16 years, our 99.75% success rate isn't marketing fluff.)
Wire Installation Warranty
We stand behind our installation work. If you experience wire-related issues due to our installation, we'll make it right.
Lifetime Support
Phone and email support is always free. Need help adjusting settings? Have a question about training? We're here.

Most installations are completed in 3-5 hours. Larger or more complex properties may take longer.
The correction is similar to a static shock from touching a doorknob, startling but not painful. Our GentleSteps™ training uses the lowest effective levels, and most dogs quickly learn to respond to the warning beep alone.
Yes. Our collars weigh under 1 oz and have adjustable settings for dogs of all sizes. We recommend waiting until puppies are at least 12 weeks old and can focus during training sessions.

The transmitter requires power to operate. We offer battery backup units that keep your system running during outages. Well-trained dogs typically respect the boundary even without the system active.
DIY kits exist, but they use lower-quality wire buried at shallow depths, leading to frequent breaks. More importantly, DIY installations don't include professional training, and training is what makes an invisible fence work.

Longer prongs are available for dogs with thick coats to ensure reliable signal contact.
In 16 years, we've contained huskies, beagles, German shepherds, Great Pyrenees, and every stubborn breed you can imagine. Our training adapts to your dog's temperament. For the most stubborn dogs, we offer a free upgrade to the UltraMaxx receiver if the standard receivers don't have enough juice. And if it doesn't work, you're covered by our money-back guarantee.
The system works year-round. The collar is weatherproof and the buried wire isn't affected by cold. In areas with deep snow drifts, we may recommend widening the signal field temporarily.
